Where did Aurelius get the wizarding abilities? I understand the mindspeech and folding. Those make sense, but where did his ability to change Reah's looks come from?

Doing my re-read and this is bothering me.

Also - I have decided that while Reah was a victim of her family and their idiocy, I am no longer as upset at Auri's treatment of her, because she was, in fact, a recruit. Therefore, she was trained for war.

I do still blame Nori for all things previously noted. Ha.

Just had to get that off my chest.

If I had to guess ... I would think that it was part of his abilities as a [strike]Saa Thalarr[/strike] Spawn Hunter. I suspect that there is a lot about the Saa Thalarr and Spawn Hunters that will be revealed in the Saa Thalarr series if / when it comes out.

Reah may be a recruit of the alliance, although, that does not automatically make her subject to non-alliance military which she was working for / with or the Saa Thalarr whom actively hide from the alliance. Therefore, in my opinion, her recruit status was irrelevant until her return to the alliance (especially since her departure was somewhat less than voluntary). This is a point that could be argued in several directions.

Norian ... refer to my beat some sense into him comment.

Here is the place to do that ... we aim to serve =).

Aurelius is not Saa Thalarr but is a Spawn Hunter. I do wonder about the wizard-type skills also now that perualpaca has pointed that out. It seems they all can fold -- they need to get to the planets to fight very quickly.

So Aurelius could change his appearance (to become Ari). He changed Reah's appearance but he was the only one that could only change Reah's appearance. The other wizards could not. So it was by some other means and not a spell.

Also (not quite on topic) I wonder how Nods recognized Reah at the end. He only saw and knew her as a young man.

I stand corrected ... Spawn Hunter ... thanks =). I still think more of the powers / abilities of the Saa Thalarr and their Spawn Hunters will be revealed in that series.

Reah has all the High Demon abilities including being immune to non friendly magic. Aurelius has a M'Fiyah with Reah, it might be because of that he could place the illusion ... or it could be an ability other than magic all together. I guess we will have to wait to see =).

I hadn't thought about the Nods part. Very good point. I wonder if it was that their illusion was as minimal as it needed to be that she was still recognizable?

On the note of Reah being a recruit - I didn't explain myself well. I didn't think that Ari had dominion over her as a recruit, but I did think that she knew what she was doing. She had been trained to use a gun. She had been trained in hand to hand. She knew procedures for emergency situations, etc. This is in stark contrast to Lissa who had to figure out everything (how to fight and who the enemy was) from scratch.

The similarities - neither of them wanted to be in that situation. :-S

I got similar questions to discussion points in an email. Here are the questions and the answers:

1) If Aurelius gave Reah blood with the red citrus drink (which is an assumption of mine at the moment) why didn’t he have to give her the permission
2) How did Nods recognise Reah at the end when he only saw her as a male in disguise on Mandil
3) Why did Aurelius have to cut Reahs hair when he had the capability to disguise her and lastly
4) How did Aurelius het the “wizard powers” to disguise her and see through Bels eyes

1. Sometimes I forget that readers don't have background information on the Saa Thalarr. Yes, Aurelius had to give permission, BUT, the recipient (hypothetically Reah) doesn't have to be conscious for that permission to be given.

2. This is tied up in the Saa Thalarr abilities, too. Aurelius only changed her appearance slightly, to make her appear more "boyish." Nods was easily able to put two and two together.

3. The Saa Thalarr philosophy is to keep everything as natural/normal as possible, to prevent attracting too much attention, in case the Ra'Ak are close. Aurelius cut Reah's hair to keep from expending TOO much power.

4. The Saa Thalarr (and to a certain extent the spawn hunters as well) have the ability to copy the natural talents of any local power wielders, be they wizards, warlocks, vampires, etc., etc. They do this to fly beneath Ra'Ak radar. While Aurelius was only expecting to find spawn attempting to overrun Mandil, it is the Saa Thalarr's creed to always expect a Ra'Ak, no matter what. Those giant serpents have been extremely crafty over the years, and it's never wise to underestimate them.

hope this helps :)
